What Is Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Insurance?
Original Medicare leaves gaps in what it pays. Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, is built to help close them.
Why
Original Medicare leaves cost-sharing gaps, such as coinsurance, copays and deductibles, that Medigap is built to close.
The benefit
More predictable out-of-pocket costs, in exchange for a separate monthly premium.
Who it's for
People who would rather pay a steady premium than face variable costs if something unexpected happens.
When to consider it
During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, the six months around your Part B start, when insurers generally cannot use health questions against you.
How to actually do it
Compare the lettered plans, such as G or N, by what each one covers. A given letter covers the same benefits no matter which company sells it.
